This was my most ambitious air brush painting, and tentatively my third good painting.

The "faster than light" drives provided to contacted worlds at this time was the great conspiracy of the age. It is not possible for material objects to travel at the speed of light, or faster. Neither do black holes or wormholes constitute a transit system since even if they "led somewhere", they would be akin to a transport system for ants that involved putting the ant on an anvil and hitting it with a hammer. Faster than light travel in fact depended upon the principle that spirit was not constrained by the faster than light restriction since it had no mass. Ordinarily faster than light travel is not available to material beings while they exist in the body. The space war had created an air of desperation and this had led to some unhealthy alliances. Jangwa were a kind of spirit being, large and powerful, but despite this, of a relatively low order, though still higher than humans. Similar to transport seraphim in that they could bear the souls of incorporeal creatures, but also different to transport seraphim in important ways. Jangwa were colloquially known as "Memories", because they had an innate and instinctive ability to "memorise" material objects through perceiving them. This meant that a Jangwa could dematerialise a physical spaceship and its occupants, for instance, bear the souls of its passengers and crew to the destination, then reconstruct the spaceship, its passengers and crew, restoring their souls to their new bodies. The problem was that Jangwa were not actually allowed to act in this way. The only Jangwa that offered this service were part of the rebellion. The price they exacted for their service was the occasional disappearing passengers and crew, who had not ceased to exist as claimed (as an inherent risk of faster than light travel), but had instead become the possessions of the Jangwa.

She reached a kind of river or lake of still, clear water. The only way across was to swim. It wasn't far. But she worried about what might be in the water.

For some interstellar colonisation missions a form of "cryosleep" was utilised. Large banks of coffin-like booths: sometimes 10, by 30 by 50, built from designs provided by the Jangwa were offered at a low cost to passengers. Once the journey began the booths unfolded into elaborate moving harnesses. The passengers were woken for long intervals, sometimes years, but within a virtual environment provided by the harness. The Jangwa could place people into virtual environments without all this technology, but for some reason this set up appealed to them.

A few weeks apart. This occurred in the period between the Morgan period and the Newanda period. The first occasion included a vision of the ouroboros, which may go some way toward explaining the persistence of the Ouroboros section of The Scientific Creation Myth article in From Particles to Angels . The second occasion is what I call "The Spiral Freakout". The content of each is easily traceable to the reading I was doing at the time. I've never successfully drawn the ouroboros vision, but this Adam and Eve picture is derived from it. The idea is that the material universe is composed of the body of the Ouroboros serpent which has neither a tail nor a head. The second of the three comic strips I did in art school (see Ziks ) was the tale of Bay Bronte Woonda, who had been sent on a mission by General Deathsheads to destroy a planet.
