My Facebook page refers to two interests: my From Particles to Angels blog here at Blogger (to be abbreviated henceforth as FPTA), and "Erotic Science Fiction Comic Book Art", with some links to some art sites where I've posted. If you are familiar with my FPTA blog (if anyone has read any of it), there may seem something odd in the pairing of this with erotic science fiction comic book art. The subject matter of the FPTA blog is also of a kind that may raise questions like: "What kind of a person is writing this?", since comments on society and religion tend to illicit the question: "Who is this person that we should listen to them?" As I say there, there is no particular reason why anyone should listen to anything I have to say. I have sometimes provided references to others who may have more authority. In the end I hope it is the words themselves that persuade, or at least suggest plausibility and a desire to look further into the matter. But I have been feeling that the existence of my interest in "erotic science fiction comic book art" may tend to undermine my arguments, mostly since it does not suggest a serious concern with social issues. That is why I have titled this blog: "The Confessions". I am embarrassed by both of my interests: of FPTA because I do not want to be perceived as a crank, and because I did not have a religious upbringing and so I still remember how I used to perceive religious people. A religious person may think here of Luke 9:26. I am embarrassed by my erotic science fiction comic book art because ... well, it's erotic science fiction comic book art. It would be much less embarrassing if it was better drawn and better written, but I can't even justify it that way. These twin interests have consumed much of my life, and I have kept them largely separate from my life in the real world by adopting a pseudonym. But adopting the same pseudonym for both has created my dilemma, though it would have seemed dishonest to have done otherwise.

The other question to answer is: Why am I posting a bunch of scraps and doodles instead of just the few decent images? I divide my artwork into my "old stuff" and my "new stuff". My new stuff refers to the period since I started producing finished artwork using Photoshop. I posted the first of these in November 2016 (at a site called Renderotica), and between then and December 2019 I have posted 18 more. So they are quite recent and there are not a great many. It takes a lot to impress people on the world wide web, and to attract and keep attention. These images have received a lukewarm response. It's bad form for an artist to blame their tools, since there are plenty of other artists doing brilliant work using the same tools. But it was not until I started using Photoshop that I felt I had found my medium. Every other medium I've used I've been frustrated by. Specifically all the physical mediums. I'm still a novice with Photoshop, not having a lot of time to devote to it. But I feel, given time, that I could achieve what I want with it. The problem is time. I may never have the time to achieve what I want with it.

I have been doing art a long time. When posting my few polished, recent images, I feel like I am just showing the tip of the iceberg. When I was young, it seemed as though I had some promise as an artist, but then nothing happened, nothing appeared. Nothing was published. Which raises the question of what have I been doing all this time? The answer is I've been producing a lot of crap for many years, little of which perhaps deserves to see the light of day. But instead of doing the sensible thing and realising that I am not after all cut out to be an artist, I just carried on producing crap out of some compulsion or delusion. Doodles, sketches and partially completed artworks, plans for finished work, but not much finished work. There are things I like about my work, and things I don't. The things I don't like have dissuaded me from investing time in producing polished, finished artwork. The things I like about them, have dissuaded me from giving it up. I have been trying to develop my ideas so that my crap ideas become good ideas. In the meantime I have aged.

I have decided to post a lot of that crap to give others a view of what has been preoccupying me for so long. I cannot show you the fruition of the task. I can only show you my efforts. I hope that by doing so, the viewer can get some idea of what I wanted to do, and maybe share my interest in it. Over the years I have developed a kind of universe. Most of my images take place in the same universe. The "stories" are cursory and derivative. I always planned to develop them to make them less so, at some point. But I guess if I could have I would have.

So I am giving you the whole secret history, warts and all as it were, in roughly chronological order, starting with high school. It might be thought of as debris washed up on a beach, from an invisible sunken shipwreck. All artwork is by myself except where stated otherwise.

Navigating this blog

Like most of these sites where everything appears in reverse chronological order by default (Patreon and Blogger do this, while Deviant Art and Renderotica are better set up for galleries), it can be difficult to navigate, so I have provided two mechanisms to make that easier.
  • Every page will have a link (at the bottom of the page) to the next page in the series, and the previous page in the series.
  • Every page will have a link to this page (called "First page - Contents", at the bottom of the page) which has an easily navigable list of contents (see below), with links to each page.

Although I have adopted a roughly chronological arrangement, related images may be grouped together even if they were done at very different times. I have also included images out of chronological order where a chronological ordering appears to be onerous. In this case I often indicate the period in which they were done. It's difficult for me to remember when things were done. I often use the style of the work to give me a clue. I've divided the work into a series of vaguely defined "periods", based on the fact that women I draw in a particular period tend to have the same look. The periods I will tend to refer to informally then are:
  1. Pre-Morgan
  2. The Morgan Period
  3. Between Morgan and Newanda
  4. The Newanda Period
  5. The Post-Newanda Period
  6. The New Stuff

I can't easily assign actual dates to these periods. Everything prior to "The New Stuff" is also collectively referred to as "The Old Stuff". If you're wondering why all the organisation, I will be posting a lot of images. See the Contents section below to get started.

Influences

I was not a reader as a youth, but would hover in book shops and look at the covers of science fictions books. Later I bought books of the works of these "cover artists" (see below).

When I first encountered pornography (long before the internet), not just Playboy and Penthouse, it seemed a revelation to me. I thought for the first time: "I am not alone in the world!" So pornography is an influence.

The single greatest (corrupting) influence on me in my youth was a fantasy/comic magazine called "Heavy Metal" ( http://www.heavymetal.com/ ), published by National Lampoon. It was originally a repackaging in English of a French magazine called "Metal Hurlant" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A9tal_hurlant ). In the pre-internet world, this was my little island of the world I wanted to be part of.

Issue 1 of Heavy Metal came out in 1977 ( Heavy Metal magazine #1 (1977) - Art of Comics Epi 50 (YouTube) ). I discovered it a few years later, and was collecting it until about 1985, losing interest in the later issues. I had inherited a handful of Marvel comic books from my older brothers when I was a kid. While I liked them (and still have some of them), they didn't interest me enough to start collecting them. Several years later I bought a few Jack Kirby comics ( http://comicvine.gamespot.com/jack-kirby/4040-5614/images/ ) and have been greatly affected by his work.

From Heavy Metal/Metal Hurlant the most important influence was an artist called Jean Giraud (also known as Moebius (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Giraud)). You can see a good selection of his stuff here: https://www.pinterest.com/topics/jean-giraud/ . Aside from early Heavy Metal magazines, there are a bunch of books of his work (Moebius 0, Moebius 1, Moebius 2, Moebius 3, Moebius 4, Moebius 5, Moebius 6, Moebius 7, Moebius 8, Moebius 9, The Incal (with Jodorowsky)).

But a lot of the other Heavy Metal artists were big influences as well, such as:

There was also a Heavy Metal Movie (Wikipedia). Episode 3 of season 12 of South Park (Major Boobage), where they discover the hallucinogenic properties of cat piss, is a kind of homage to Heavy Metal magazine.

In college, some friends introduced me to the comic 2000AD and I became interested in Kevin O'Neill for a while (pinterest). See for instance, Nemesis the Warlock. I was also introduced to "Love & Rockets" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_and_Rockets_(comics) ) created by the Hernandez brothers and Mechanics created by Jaime Hernandez.

Some years later I bought a few "Image" comics to see what was happening in the comics scene. I've never been a reader of comics. Even the Heavy Metal magazine. I would not read the stories (sometimes they wouldn't have one), but would spend hours looking at the pictures. Although I'm interested in science fiction I've read little fiction of any kind. This has probably been a major obstacle to me writing a story for my comic. I get all my fiction from movies. Instead I read a lot of non-fiction, on all kinds of subjects, which doesn't tend to leave time for reading fiction.

These science fiction cover artists whose work I saw in bookshops were my other great influences.

Somehow the stories inside the books weren't as interesting to me as the covers. Stanislaw Lem's "Solaris" is one of my favourites of the few pieces of fiction I have read.

After the advent of the internet I discovered the following artists.

I'm also partial to Picasso. The all-time most influential painter though is the Swiss surrealist H. R. Giger ( https://www.hrgiger.com/http://io9.gizmodo.com/the-most-unforgettable-creations-of-h-r-giger-1576157799 or https://art.vniz.net/en/giger/ ). His books are: NecronomiconNecronomicon IIGiger's AlienHR GIGER ARh+.

I should also mention futurist designers such as Syd Mead ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/40143737@N02/sets/72157622906191929/ ), Ron Cobb ( http://roncobb.net/film.html ) and I suppose Ralph McQuarrie.

I have an extensive collection of dvds/bluray. As part of this I also have an extensive collection of Anime, which would also constitute a major influence. Some favourites would be Paprika, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Psycho Pass, Attack on Titan, Spirited Away … etc. In terms of erotic anime I would mention Stringendo and Accelerando, but there isn't much of a story. While I have Blue Girl and Urotsukidoji I don't go back to them much. I am partial to the "panty" anime, of which I think Aika (The Naked Missions) would be the classic. Although a big influence, Japanese erotic anime tends not to be as good as their non-erotic work. But who else is doing it? Movies in general are a big influence.

In the erotic comic book genre, aside from the Heavy Metal artists, I like "Yuppies, Rednecks, and Lesbian Bitches From Mars" ( https://www.amazon.com/Yuppies-Rednecks-Lesbian-Bitches-Adult/dp/B007KU8YP6/ ) and the ubiquitous JAB Comics ( https://www.8muses.com/comix/album/free-jab-comics ) and John Persons ( http://www.imagefap.com/pics/4/anime.php?perpage=25&search=john+person&gen=4 ). I haven't really spent a lot of time looking into the erotic comics genre (e.g., Eros Comix), probably because they weren't readily available when I was young. But I have downloaded a lot of images. I should mention the likes of DoFantasy/Fansadox. Ferres does beautiful work (see for instance: Red Riding Hood, Red Riding Hood 2 and Death In The Harem), and I'm also partial to Erenisch. I should also mention Steve Carter. I came across Jungle Ghoul Girls soon after college.

The Renderotica site ( https://www.renderotica.com/ ) is also an influence. I'm very interested in 3d computer generated images as a medium, and I have dabbled in it, but it isn't really practical for doing stories without a team of people, so I decided to stick to the comic book as a medium. I'm very excited to see what's coming in the 3d medium though (I can't resist including a link to this (I think the future of robotics)). See "Kunoichi - Broken Princess" (and the sequel) by Studio FOW. Animo Pron is doing incredible things in 3d. Another noteworthy piece of 3d erotica is this, but I don't know who it's by: http://www.zzcartoon.com/videos/kinky-octopus-fills-holes-of-a.html. While I haven't played any erotic computer games I am impressed by the ads.

This is the art that comes to mind when I think about my influences. There's so much great art and so many artists around now there isn't time to look at it. Deviant Art has some amazing work. I spend a lot of time looking at art on the internet, but don't follow particular artists with the kind of devotion I did when young. As can be seen, there is nothing highbrow in my artistic interests or influences.
