New Stuff

The "new stuff" is marked by the exclusive use of Photoshop to produce finished pieces. The goal of this period is not only to produce finished pieces, but that they finally have polish. The original drawings are still done on paper, which are then scanned. With the new stuff period, A2 becomes the page size. So a half-page frame is A3 and a quarter-page frame A4. I will date the beginning of the period from around the time I bought my first Surface Pro and started using Photoshop for more than just tests (2014). Some images may have been done earlier. The period is ongoing and includes pretty much anything I do from now on.

On this "New Stuff" page I will only be posting finished photoshop works. For related sketches, tests, drawings and background, see other pages. If a new stuff piece is on a subject that has its origin in the old stuff, you may find related material on the relevant old stuff page. If the new stuff piece introduces a new idea, related material may be on subsequent pages. See the links at the bottom of this page to navigate to other pages. Matchmaker 1.0
Photoshop.

Matchmaker 1.0 is the first completed image of the new stuff. The story concerns a company providing a matchmaker service. Parents take their daughters with them to apply, and the company attempts to match them to a comfortably wealthy husband. In the case of a successful match (marriage) the parents receive a handsome fee initially, as well as a small ongoing, occasional stipend. All of which can be recalled in the case of the marriage failing (within a certain fixed period). The company has a good reputation with its wealthy clients because of the way it prepares the girls for their new role. Prostitution and the exploitation of women are common themes in the new stuff. The stories themselves are also exploitative.

Matchmaker 2.0 continues the theme introduced in Matchmaker 1.0. In this case, the company seeks out beautiful girls in isolated villages for its clients.

Princess 1
Photoshop.

Princess 1 is set in Old Kholleasis (see Kholleasis). While the Old Kholleasis period as a whole is generally characterised by the complete dominance of men over women, this characteristic has its origin primarily in the First Great Empire. The Princess 1 story is set just before the rise of this empire. The ageing king has no sons and two daughters, one of whom is assumed will inherit the crown. The other princess is kidnapped by a troop of gorillas.

For a brief time in the new stuff period I made a rule for myself that any picture I started I had to complete in photoshop before I could do any other images. This was an attempt to overcome my habit of producing lots of sketches and very little finished work. The Princess 1 image convinced me that this was a bad idea, since I think it would have benefited from more preparation at the design stage. So I soon abandoned this rule.

Tentacles 1

Tentacles 1 is set on Mistikyte (see Herakles 1 in Kholleasis). It shows one of the crew of the Andrea encountering a local "phenomenon".

Miras 1 depicts my longstanding idea of galaxy-scale architecture (see Miras).

Andrea 1
Photoshop.

Andrea was the name of both the girl and the spaceship. Andrea was the girlfriend of the engineer who designed the spaceship. After they broke up he attempted to change the name of the spaceship, but it was too far into the project and they would not allow a change in the branding. So he started referring to the girl as "bad Andrea" to make the distinction clear. The engineer was also the architect of Olympos University. If it seems strange that a spaceship designer is also an architect, consider that large spaceships are effectively flying buildings. Apartment blocks, office buildings, factories, research facilities, and not infrequently commercial districts. Whole communities. See Herakles 1 in Kholleasis for more information on the Andrea mission. I always wanted to do a Star Trek style story about a group of people on a big spaceship, travelling around and having adventures. That is what the Andrea is for me. The red-haired girl in College 1 above, grows up to be the chief engineer on the Andrea during the Ophos mission.

Mistikyte on K 1
Photoshop.

The "K" in "Mystikyte on K" stands for "Kholleasis".  See Herakles 1 in Kholleasis for more information on Mystikyte. "Mystikyte on K" was a region of Old Kholleasis that was a kind of outpost of the more advanced Mystikyte. Mystikyte had ties with the Jangwa (see Memory).

Old Newgrove is Newgrove at an earlier time, before the flood swept away the town.

Obastel and Torwis 1

Obastel and Torwis 1 shows an occasion from the life of Obastel prior to the time of her falling. She is seen here being interrupted by desire while creating a golem from clay.

Joanne 1
Photoshop.

Joanne's young parents were in the habit of having sex in front of her while she was a toddler. One of the defining experiences of her life was sitting on the floor and watching the expression on her father's face as her mother was giving him a blowjob. The sun was shining through the window onto his face, and with the eyes of childhood, it seemed to her that she was seeing something mystical. She sought to recapture the feeling she had at that moment for the rest of her life, in a vicarious sexuality, a complex frequently activated and fed. She would eventually become a prostitute. The story of Joanne is an instance of a plot device for creating a woman who prefers giving blowjobs to having sex. A theme repeated in various forms. Another variation on this theme are the genetically engineered women sometimes referred to colloquially as "woodpeckers". Joanne 1 shows Joanne's view of a couple of insects in a puddle in a pothole in a road in an industrial district, as she squats by the puddle, seen with the eyes of childhood.
