A submissive relationship with men was not permitted within the female army, and any instances were severely punished. Some members of the upper echelons of the military hierarchy had set up secret facilities where pre-revolutionary gender relationships could be played out, as well as stylized and exaggerated versions of them.

This sequence is also set on New Kholleasis, but on a small air transport in flight. It shows the events leading up to the scene shown in New Kholleasis 1 (see Kholleasis). A female insurgent has concealed herself on board a semen transport. She opens a ceiling panel and drops from her hiding place to the floor, taking the panel with her for cover.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk2 - p28 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
When the craft takes a hard right between some tall buildings, she slides to the left across the floor. One of the pilots catches sight of her reflection in the instrument panel.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk2 - p29 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
It turns out he is seeing a reflection of a reflection. That pilot is shot through the helmet and the other steers the craft into a steep climb.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk2 - p30 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
She falls some distance to the back wall, which knocks the wind out of her. As the craft levels off they start firing at each other, during which the windscreen shatters.

He wrestles the gun out of her hand. She gets one hand free and punches him, with little effect.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk2 - p32 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |

He was bigger and stronger than she was, so she had to be more agile.

A shot to the head to finish him off. Then she turns the craft and heads for the rendezvous.

Valerie woke up and said: "I had the weirdest dream." Armand was a programmer, but when he inherited his parents' farm he moved there. He didn't do any farming. He kept on the men his parents had employed to do the farming. So to the outside world he was a farmer. He was a computer hacker, and he used this farm as his base of operations as he secretly roamed the worldwide web.

The morning sun was creeping down from the tops of the hills. A thin strand of white smoke rose from the house in the dark valley among the trees.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk2 - p42 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
If there was such a thing as a nymphomaniac Valerie probably was one. She wanted sex all the time. At first he was overjoyed, but soon discovered he couldn't keep up and she was doing it with whoever was available. They got married anyway. There were two conditions: that Armand could get sex whenever he wanted, however he wanted, and that her indiscretions were discrete, and with no disrespect. Eventually this amounted only to not having sex with others in his sight. She would hide the fact out of respect for him, and so did her other lovers. Three of the workers waited around on the veranda, for Armand and Valerie to finish, then Valerie would go with them into town to buy seeds from the wholesaler.

Veronica arrives at Juan's house, walking with her shoes in her hand. There she finds Nick working on the tractor.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk2 - p50 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Veronica's surprise visit didn't go the way she hoped. Nick took the opportunity to break things off with her. He took her into the house to break the bad news. He had enough of sleeping with other men's women.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk2 - p51 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Back at the house, Alej had asked Morgan if she needed any money. Her response was: "I don't think so." She didn't have money for a bus or train ticket, and so Morgan had asked him to take her to a local roadside truckstop diner. Which is where they are now headed.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk2 - p52 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
They went to a ditch away from the road.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk2 - p53 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
After the interruption they resume their journey. Walking back to the bike, Morgan spits out semen, which lands on blades of grass.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk2 - p54 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Ziegler, Zarkov and Zelda have reached the airport. Veronica is back at the house. She drops her empty glass into the pool.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk2 - p55 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
And watches it sink to the bottom. Then she salutes it and says: "And I alone am left to tell the tale." Then she notices a Post It note on the whisky bottle. Apparently Ziegler assumed she would most likely find it there. It stated: "Taken Z+Z to airport. Z."

Book 3
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p1 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Alej and Morgan reach the roadside diner. Morgan goes in without him.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p2 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
There were some girls in the carpark.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p3 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
After a brief conversation with one, he offers to give her a ride home. She is sceptical at first.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p4 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
But he was able to bring her around. Inside the diner, Morgan approaches one of the drivers for a ride. He responds with a lecture on the dangers of hitchhiking.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p5 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Morgan says: "Suit yourself" and moves on. She tries a few others without success.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p6 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
So she sits down and has a meal. She had enough money for that. The girl on the back of Alej's bike points out that they've missed the turn.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p7 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Morgan was hanging around, holding her bag. Wondering what to do next, when someone said: "I hear you're looking for a ride." The girl on the back of Alej's bike asks him to stop so she can get off.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p8 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
The girl becomes more insistent about being let off the bike.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p9 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Eventually he did stop. It was the middle of nowhere. She jumps off the bike and backs away warily. Alej regards her silently. She starts walking back along the deserted road. Some distance away she takes off her shoes to make walking easier, and in case she needs to run. She catches sight of Alej running after her.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p10 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
She runs a short distance then turns to face him, brandishing her shoes. Suddenly she turns as if having an idea, and runs away again in a different direction.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p11 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Alej turned to look behind him. There was a car approaching from a distance, but it was on a different road. The road passed some distance away, beyond a grove of trees and up a steep grassy slope.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p12 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
She wasn't going to make it. They would only see her if they happened to look down the slope. Then Alej caught up with her.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p13 (excerpt) Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
She strikes Alej with her shoe.

As Morgan and her ride walk towards his truck, the one who lectured Morgan appears at the diner door and demands to know where the guy is taking her. The guy answers that he is taking her home.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p17 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Brown smoke erupts from a chimney-like exhaust and 16 massive wheels begin to inch forward across the gravel.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p18 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
The massive engine makes the cab rattle and throb. In the rear of the cab is a small mattress in a cubicle with a curtain.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p19 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Alej took the girl back down to the grove of trees. Morgan was watching the driver. He was neither handsome nor ugly. He looked ordinary, which was exactly what she wanted.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p20 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
She took off her top and he started to drift into the other lane.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p21 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Then she took off her shorts. She climbed down onto the floor of the cab, amid dirt, debris and the close sound of the engine.

Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p25 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Then he fed her with a spoon. The truck had a line of vehicles behind it on the gentle incline.

Alej remembered an occasion with his father when he was younger. His father was explaining that the universe was mostly empty, and living things only appeared "in a few cracks in the chaos machine". Like the way when you throw a handful of pebbles on the ground they may form a pattern. When one of the pebbles is moved, the pattern disappears.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p30 (excerpt) Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
That was Alej's introduction to nihilism.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p31 (excerpt) Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
His father went back to the house and left Alej to meditate on his words. Alej's attention was caught by a black snake disappearing seamlessly into the black shadow of the tree. So black they seemed like cut-outs, revealing the void. He shivered and jumped back out of the shadow. Afraid of being bit, but also worried that it would somehow become a part of him.

Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p42 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p43 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
I had an idea for this section. The truck was parked near a large billboard. On it was a pair of handguns, antiparallel. The barrel of one pointing to the right, the other, upside down with its barrel pointing left, so that together they form a kind of Yin-Yang. With the caption: "ORGANIZED CRIME: Passing on the savings to you". Organized Crime (OC) was a MMORPG, a popular computer game. The company was then purchased by an actual organised crime syndicate as part of its money laundering activity, injecting even more capital. The company went from strength to strength, eventually owning hotels, apartment buildings, shopping malls, fast food franchises and public utilities. It was an open secret that everyone accepted.

Ziegler dropped Zelda and Zarkov at the airport and returned home.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p45 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Zelda was talking to Zarkov about unity. It was the beginnings of an idea that would be developed in the two articles: Unity vs Robot Zombies - Part 1 and Unity vs Robot Zombies - Part 2.

The airliner was about to start boarding. Meanwhile in the small space station in orbit, that belonged to Olympos University, a man was shooting a water pistol.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p49 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
A quivering puddle of water was attached by surface tension to a floating breast in freefall. The droplets fired from the water pistol splashed into it, either adding to it or passing through.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p50 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Having sex in zero gravity is difficult, so with people spending more time in space, they started constructing frames to anchor themselves. It was a small step from there to the paraphernalia of BDSM to begin its appearance in space. There were dozens of space stations in orbit. Some owned by major colleges. This one was part owned by Olympos University.

Brenda heard a voice say: "You must move Vulcan ahead 400 metres ahead in its orbit." But the sound seemed to come out of the air. Vulcan was the name of the space station belonging to Olympos University. Brenda was unaware that over the last few weeks, psychologists had been noticing this phrase appearing in the word salad of schizophrenics the world over.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p68 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
When it happened again Brenda thought she would ignore it. Maybe a researcher had come up with the trick.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk3 - p69 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
The next time, the message was slightly different: "If Vulcan is not moved 400 metres ahead in its orbit it will be destroyed." The threat meant she couldn't just ignore it.

The old couple who lived at the top of the cliff came down and rowed up to her. The old lady asked if she was ovulating, but the girl didn't know.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p3 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
The old lady said the girl should not have sexual intercourse for 6 weeks unless she wanted her child to be a seer. Bhubette had not been seen for many years, but the stories were common knowledge.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p4 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Brenda landed on the idea of taking someone into the other room in hopes they would hear the voice for themselves.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p5 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
She says: "Listen", and he says: "I'm listening" and she says: "Shh!" Then he hears it.

Actually moving the space station was a trivial act, but someone had to authorise it, and that's where a reasonable explanation was required. The staff at Olympos University let the crew of the space station know what was going on. They had a video connection but it just came off looking like a practical joke. In the end they decided to pass it off as a routine test of the maneuvering rockets.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p9 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
As the space station edged away from its location a large disk of white light appeared nearby.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p10 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
The disk grew, and as they reached the edge of it, suddenly something big was rushing very fast by them.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p11 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
It was a lot bigger than the space station.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p12 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
It was headed straight down toward the surface.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p13 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Then they noticed something else had emerged from the disk behind them. Someone used the phrase "giant space robot". The name would stick (see GSR).

Back in their seats Zelda looks out the window and sees an enormous object falling from the sky, on fire, burning with all the colours of the rainbow. Her first thought was: "Wow, that's beautiful!" But a moment later she ponders the damage it may do. When it struck the ground, a blinding white light filled the sky.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p24 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
The damage would have been far more extensive, but the object enveloped itself in a dome-shaped force field, containing the blast. Everything inside the dome was incinerated and the object sank into the molten rock.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p25 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p26 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Alej had ridden away during the night. Then returned. At dawn he was the first to wake.

At Olympos University they're watching the news report on the crashed object. The forcefield has disappeared. The molten rock has solidified with only part of the object protruding. Forest fires rage in the vicinity. Helicopters fly over the site. Above the helicopters, above the clouds, can be seen the other giant space robot. Brenda sees a tall girl she doesn't recognise standing in the room with a serene expression. She's topless, which is not so unusual. But there's something else odd about her. It takes a moment for Brenda to realise what it is. Then she notices that the girl is faintly glowing.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p32 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
No one else in the room has noticed the girl yet. Brenda grabs the hair of the guy sitting by her and uses it to turn his head away from the news report and toward the girl.
Ziegler's Brain Storyboard - Bk4 - p33 Ballpoint pen on ruled notepad. |
Then there is a bright flash of light from the location of the girl, at which point everyone else in the room notices her.
We leave Ziegler's Brain there.

When I joined Renderotica in 2003 I had to choose a username, and chose "Alej". Not much thought went into it. As I joined other sites I stuck with Alej Malchevan so that became my online identity. Alej Malchevan at that time was the Alej Malchevan of Hellfire and Hellfire 2. As the Alej character evolved in Zieglers Brain and Zieglers Brain 2, having this as my alter ego became problematic. I didn't want to change my pseudonym, or the name of the character, as I had been living with both for some time. So I adopted the same expedient as the designer of the Andrea (see Andrea 1 in New Stuff). The character in the stories would be referred to as "bad Alej", to differentiate him from anyone else of the same name.

Having Myrdemmon appear with the young Alej was also problematic for the timeline of the story, since Myrdemmon arrives on Owel by means of the cope gate produced by the adult Malchevan's experiments. I don't believe in or like the idea of time travel. Though one notion I have toyed with is that the worlds in the stories exist in the memory of the jangwa (see Memory), so that linear time can be circumvented at will. Along the same lines, I've considered making Owel Middle Kholleasis, so that the Andrea mission to Old Kholleasis is a journey into their own past (see Kholleasis).
Another time travel variation I've toyed with is that of parallel worlds coexisting, bifurcating at every actioned decision point (that is, every decision point where a different decision was made, not necessarily every possible decision that could be made). While the multiplication of worlds in this model is unpleasant, this can be controlled by assuming predestination, that is, all alternative timelines preexisting, so that all decisions (that can be) made is predetermined.
After the woman he abducted escaped, in the nude, bad Alej fled into the jungle for several years. When he eventually re-emerged, he was arrested and spent several years in prison. He would have spent longer in prison, but the woman he abducted explained that as he was chasing her up the muddy mountainside in the rain, at a certain point he gave up and let her go. So that when he disappeared during the Hellfire project, it was his second period in the jungle.
The short Samantha sequence marks the transition from the Ziegler's Brain period to the new stuff. It has one of the first photoshop tests. After the Ziegler's Brain period, storyboards are less well drawn, just cursory scribbles. For the Samantha sequence I was still working small, on A4, but the move to the new stuff, is marked by a move to working larger.
This image probably dates to my first year in art school.
