Red Worm (pencil)

The Red Worm

The Red Worm was another product of the copes (see Hellfire 2 (Copes 1 to 7)), an autonomous AI manifesting physically anywhere in the world. Because of its frequent occurrence it had received some concerted study. The skin of the creature secreted a narcotic that primarily targeted the skin and genitalia. Seeping into the blood it crossed the blood-brain barrier, becoming psychoactive and working on the pleasure centres of the brain directly. The chemical compound had never been encountered before, but once discovered a lucrative black market developed. Seeping into the muscle tissue it was effectively able to take control of the body, flexing and relaxing the muscles of its … partner according to some agenda of its own. The Red Worm is frequently compared to a musician playing an instrument, where the human in its grip is the instrument. Its goal seems to be purely to cause pleasure.

The Red Worm is not a single AI, but rather a hierarchically arranged system of semi-independent AIs. So that individual arms and tendrils appear to have "a mind of its own", though subservient to the whole. Although referred to as "AIs" because of their technological origin, the creature itself is organic. It appears and disappears at will and unpredictably. It typically first appears as a tiny red worm, which over the course of a several seconds grows to full size, remaining for anywhere from several minutes to a few hours, then suddenly shrinking away again and disappearing. There is a subculture of people seeking to track, predict, control or reproduce the creature.

(The drawing was inspired by a scene from one of my favourite movies: "Galaxy of Terror" (1981), produced by Roger Corman, starring Edward Albert and Erin Moran. James Cameron was Production Designer and Second Unit Director.)

At one point in the story, Elbeth and Milae split up while living on Owel, and at this time, Elbeth comes into contact with Cairnsa. It appears from this series of images that Newanda also had an encounter with Cairnsa. Here he is showing her around his underworld.

Newanda has sex with one of Cairnsa's sex monsters. The creature was blind and genetically engineered to be perpetually horny. When it wasn't having sex it was frantic with frustration.

Gestalt girl's head was not in her head. It was out there in the world. The feelings of others she felt as her own. Shuddering applause rushed torrentially through pure and egoless, boundary-less, undefined and forceless being.
